This page displays some of the
custom designed and built projects completed by IKON. All these items were designed and manufactured to suit the exact needs of the client.
HYBRID SERVICE VEHICLE
The Hybrid Service Vehicle was designed and manufactured for a client who has a lease on a 40 km section of disused main line track. It is a Hybrid drive system, operating on batteries when on level track and when operating on downgrades the motors regenerate power into the traction battery. On steep uphill grades the gen set cuts in and this matches the motor requirements so that there is virtually no load on the traction batteries. The vehicle is used by crews for track inspection, maintainance and for transporting weed control equipment.

RAIL CRUISER
The Rail Cruiser is one of a batch we designed and manufactured for a tourist operation in the central North Island of New Zealand. The clients operate these vehicles themselves on the 10 km long rail track. Several hi-tech systems are incorporated such as an infa red anti-collision system to prevent the Rail Cruisers getting too close, GPS location and two-way radios in each vehicle.
The Rail Cruisers are battery electric / Hybrid 4 wheel drive, they travel at a maximum speed of 20 km/hour and also incorporate regenerative battery charging on down grades.

CRYSTAL MOUNTAIN ROAD TRAIN
The locomotive is powered by a Toyota 3 litre turbo diesel engine with a low ratio automatic
transmission. It is road legal without passengers aboard so it can be moved to various
locations as required for special parades etc. When carrying passengers its maximum operating
speed is 10 km/hour. Four wheel drive is available if required. Each passenger car has a
seating capacity for approximately 30 adults or 40 children. Driver operated hydraulic brakes
are fitted to the rear axle on each car. The total length is 20 metres.
The Crystal Mountain Express Road Train was designed and manufactured by Ikon Engineering Ltd.

QUAD BIKE
Ikon
designed and manufactured this custom built 'Quad Bike' to suit the exact requirements of
the client.
The machine has a tubular steel frame, dual braking systems and many gear ratios to
cover all possibilities on up and downgrades. A small electric motor and battery unit
is mounted behind the rider's seat to assist on the upgrades if necessary. The
battery unit can be recharged overnight.

YELLOW SUBMARINE - Loco and Passenger car
The Wellington Regional Council had IKON LOCOMOTIVE WORKS design and build this
locomotive and passenger car set to allow workers to travel through the tunnel to
service equipment essential to the supply of clean water through the 1 meter diameter pipe
to the Wellington area.
The locomotive is powered by a 17 hp Yanmar diesel engine driving through an Eaton
Hydraulic transmission to all 8 wheels. It can travel at up to 12 km/hour and uses
less than 1 litter of diesel fuel per hour. The locomotive seats 4 adults and the
passenger car can seat 8 adults.

VECTOR POWER TUNNEL SERVICE TRAIN
Ikon won the contract to design and build the Diesel Hydraulic Locomotive
and three flat deck cars to provide servicing access for work crews operating
in the 10 km long tunnel under Auckland city. The tunnel houses the new
power cables which supply power to Auckland City. A generator set, toilet and
washing facilities are also incorporated in the train set. Up to eight
passengers can be seated in the personnel / inspection car. The locomotive uses
around 2 litres of diesel per hour running at its maximum speed of 14 km / hr.
The Yanmar Diesel engine is fitted with a very efficient 'Catalytic Converter',
which reduces the particulate matter (Black smoke) by 95%.
The locomotive has an additional alternator fitted to supply power for the many
work lights that are fitted to the train set.
Ikon also designed and manufactured the special 4 blade points (in foreground)
which allow rubber tyred vehicles to pass through the junction at Newmarket.

MERRY GO ROUND
This 7 metre diameter Merry Go Round IKON designed, built and installed at the Manu
Ariki Marae at Taumarunui on the 3rd March 2002. The Merry Go Round is permanently
installed on a 2 .5 X 2.5 metre square concrete base. There are 8 passenger cars,
these each seat two people facing each other. This machine operates from a 230 volt
10 amp single phase power supply. There is a soft start clutch and a brake to stop
the rotor, which runs at 10 RPM at full operating speed. At this speed the
fibreglass passenger cars swing out at 30 degrees.

AUCKLAND HARBOUR BRIDGE SERVICE VEHICLE
This long and low, battery-powered, electric train set is one of two that we designed and built to operate
inside the box girders in the Auckland Harbour Bridge. The train will be used by maintainance crews
to haul in various equipment required for the upgrading of the bridge's outer lanes. The low shape is
necessary as there is only 25 mm clearance above the driver's head when passing through the access
diaphragms inside the bridge structure.
