IKON designs and manufactures a large variety of Steam, Electric and Diesel small-scale
locomotives, up to 750mm gauge. We are also able to design and manufacture rolling stock
for small-scale railroads.

'Phantom' Steam Locomotive (for 7.25" track)
This 1/6 full size locomotive and tender was designed by IKON to be an easy
locomotive to build. It has a capacity to haul 20 adults or 30 children on
gradients of 1 in 60. A kit is available which includes wheel and cylinder
castings and a set of plans.

This was a prize-winning locomotive at the Blenheim Live Steamers
Convention in 2000.

Model B Shay (for 7.25" or 7.5" gauge)
This 1/3 full size locomotive is based on the 24 tonne
2' gauge prototype. It is a 3 cylinder 2-truck style locomotive, LPG fired.
This locomotive has been designed and manufactured by IKON. It has an operating
speed 12 km/h, with a carrying capacity of 50 adults or 70 children. The
image above shows the Shay made by owner Dave Giles on the Blenheim, New
Zealand, track at the convention in January 2000. Behind the loco is some
of the rolling stock also made by IKON.

The Shay 'La Fayette' (for 7.25" gauge)
The Shay locomotive 'La Fayette' designed and built at IKON Loco
Works for an Australian client. The scale is 3 - 3/4" to the foot and operates
on 7.25" gauge track. It is a three cylinder two truck model "B' and is Propane fired,
with the Propane cylinders in the fuel tender car riding behind the locomotive. The
original prototype weighed in at 24 tonnes, this locomotive has a normal operating
speed is between 8-16 km/hour, with a boiler volume of 43 litres operating at
100 PSI (7 bar).

The Shay No.5 (for 7.25" gauge)
This locomotive is the same specifications as the the Shay "LaFayette"
except that this one is coal fired, not LPG fired.

The Black Shay (for 287mm gauge)
The Black Shay steam loco on the bridge at Manukau Live Steamers is another 1/3 full size SHAY locomotive.
We manufactured this one for a Swedish client who came out to NZ to test the loco.
He approved of its performance and we have now shipped to his private railroad near Stockholm.
The track gauge on this loco is 287 mm and the EU fully certified boiler is fired by Propane.

Ikon Loco Works for use in a movie filmed in New Zealand.

DXR 8022 Battery-Electric Locomotive (for 185mm gauge)
We designed and manufactured the DXR 8022 locomotive to a scale of 1/6 full size. It is powered by 4 X 750 watt DC motors and can haul 5 passenger cars with 30 adult passenger on board at 11 km/hour on 185 mm gauge track. It incorporates regenerative braking on all drive wheels and will operate for 12 hours on a battery charge. A heavy duty two stage 24 Volt battery charger is incorporated.

NZR Ec Battery-Electric Locomotive (for 7.25" gauge)
This locomotive was designed and manufactured by IKON.
It is powered by two 600W motors and four 105AH deep-cycle batteries. It
has dynamic braking to control train speed on down grades. Passenger hauling
capacity is 20 adults or 30 children on gradients of 1 in 60.

'Red Admiral Express'
The "Red Admiral Express" locomotive and passenger cars were
designed and manufactured by Ikon Loco Works for the Butterfly Creek fun park near
Auckland Airport. The locomotive is powered by a Toyota 1500cc petrol engine driving
the wheels via an Eaton Hydraulic Transmission. The train is braked by compressed
air supplied from the locomotive. A fully operational 4 note chime whistle is also
included. Each passenger car seats 16 adults or 24 children.

NZR Dx Locomotive (for 7.25" gauge)
This locomotive is powered by a 16HP petrol-hydraulic
drive. Passenger hauling capacity is 50 adults or 60 children on gradients
of 1 in 60. This locomotive has recently been totally upgraded and rebuilt
by IKON.

'Sammy The Shunter'
This 1/2 size locomotive is based on a 0-6-0 Diesel-hydraulic
Fowler 600mm gauge. Passenger capacity is 36 adults or 48 children. Designed
and built by IKON for Monterey Park Museum and Railroad, Auckland, New
Zealand.

NZR Dc Locomotive (for 15" gauge)
The Yellow loco with the Lion crest on the front is a 1/4 full size scale NZR Dc locomotive
designed to operate on 15" gauge track. It is powered by a 33 hp YANMAR diesel engine and
hydraulic transmission to all 8 wheels. The Wanganui Lions club will be running it at
their railway park beside the river in Wanganui.
